Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

This is entirely dependent on your needs, the goal and you.  This can be best discussed with your clinician during the initial appointment.

Can I get a Medicare rebate?

A mental health treatment plan lets you claim up to 10 individual and 10 group sessions with a mental health professional each calendar year. To start with, your doctor or psychiatrist will refer you for up to 6 sessions at a time. If you need more, they can refer you for further sessions. Our psychology sessions have a rebate of $93.85 per session.

Please note: you cannot claim both a Medicare rebate and a private health fund rebate for the same session.

What is your cancellation policy?
We highly value your scheduled appointments and kindly request a minimum of 24 hours advance notice if you need to cancel. If cancellations occur within 24 hours of the appointment, a fee equivalent to 50% of the session rate will be charged.
Do I need a referral?

You can refer yourself or someone else, e.g. a doctor, nurse, support person, social worker, etc. can do it for you.  If you see your doctor first, you may be eligible for a mental health care plan where you will be able to receive a Medicare rebate.

What is telehealth?
Telehealth is a video conference session involving you and your clinician using both a video and audio connection.  You may already use FaceTime, Skype, Zoom or Messenger to connect to family and friends.  It is the same thing but talking to a psychologist instead.
What are the fees?

Fees are as follows and if you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) you will get a Medicare rebate:
Psychologist: $220 per session (51 minutes)
Provisional Psychologist: $145 per session (51 minutes)
Counsellor: $129 per session (51 minutes)

The current recommended fee for psychologists is $300 (AAPi and APS) for a standard psychology session 45-60 minutes.  We aim to keep costs as low as possible for all clients at Ace Psychology.

Do you offer private health insurance rebate?
If you have private health insurance, you may be able to get some money back. You can check with your insurer and some cover counselling too!

Please note: you cannot claim both a Medicare rebate and a private health fund rebate for the same session.

Is my counselling or psychology session confidential?
Yes, to a certain extent.  All staff are bound by ethical requirements and will keep their notes in a file, locked in a filing cabinet in their office or within a secure storage system online.  There are times when information will have to be disclosed and these are: if it is subpoenaed by a court; if the clinician believed you or another person is at serious risk to life, health or safety; or if your prior permission has been given to provide a written report or discuss with another professional or agency, e.g. your GP.
Do you offer Afterpay?

Yes we do! We offer Afterpay with transactions made in-person only at this stage. This can be for an assessment or individual therapy.
