Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral?
You can refer yourself or someone else, e.g. a doctor, nurse, support person, social worker, etc. can do it for you. If you see your doctor first, you may be eligible for a mental health care plan where you will be able to receive a Medicare rebate.
Do you offer private health insurance rebate?
If you have private health insurance, you may be able to get some money back. You can check with your insurer and some cover counselling too!
Please note: you cannot claim both a Medicare rebate and a private health fund rebate for the same session.
What is telehealth?
Telehealth is a video conference session involving you and your clinician using both a video and audio connection. You may already use FaceTime, Skype, Zoom or Messenger to connect to family and friends. It is the same thing but talking to a psychologist instead.
What are the fees?
- Psychologist: $220-$244.83 per session (51 minutes). Psychology sessions will be eligible for a Medicare rebate with a Mental Health Care Plan (provided by your GP) or Private Health rebate with your insurer.
- Counsellor: $80 per session (51 minutes)
The current recommended fee for psychologists in 2024-2025 is $311 (AAPi and APS) for a standard psychology session 46-60 minutes.
We aim to keep costs as low as possible for all clients at Ace Psychology.
Is my counselling or psychology session confidential?
Yes, to a certain extent. All staff are bound by ethical requirements and will keep their notes in a file, locked in a filing cabinet in their office or within a secure storage system online. There are times when information will have to be disclosed and these are:
- if it is subpoenaed by a court;
- if the clinician believed you or another person is at serious risk to life, health or safety; or
- if your prior permission has been given to provide a written report or discuss with another professional or agency, e.g. your GP.
Do you offer Afterpay?
Yes we do! We offer Afterpay with transactions made in-person only at this stage.
Can I get a Medicare rebate?
A mental health treatment plan lets you claim up to 10 individual and 10 group sessions with a mental health professional each calendar year. To start with, your doctor or psychiatrist will refer you for up to 6 sessions initially and a further 4 sessions once you visit the GP again towards the end of the 6 sessions. Our psychology sessions have a rebate of $96.65 per session.
Please note: you cannot claim both a Medicare rebate and a private health fund rebate for the same session.
How many sessions will I need?
This is entirely dependent on your needs, the goal and you. This can be best discussed with your clinician during the initial appointment.
What is your cancellation policy?
We highly value your scheduled appointments and kindly request a minimum of 48 hours notice if you need to cancel. If cancellations occur within 48 hours of the appointment, a full session fee will be charged.
